Milan Dumanovic, a former inspector of the Criminal Police Directorate, called on July 29 Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Interior Minister Aleksandar Vulin insincere in their claims and voiced intentions to cleanse the top of the Serbian Ministry of Internal Affairs of all police officers working with criminal groups.

Dumanovic told BETA that it is loyalty to the Serbian Progressive Party rather than professionalism that is being insisted on within the ministry.

“It’s likely that personnel loyal to [former minister of the interior] Nebojsa Stefanovic, will be removed and replaced by, not professionals, but once again by obedient police officers faithful to the current regime. In the ministry, being faithful to the regime has been more important than competence or education ever since 2014, when Stefanovic became the minister and whereby the Progressive party took over the police,” the former inspector said.

When asked if police officers of today are free to do their jobs honorably and professionally, Dumanovic responded that they can only follow the orders that come from the top of the Serbian Progressive Party.

“The police’s [scope of action] is limited, and they can only do what suits the regime. And so, sadly, the police cannot see any investigation involving criminal activities that may be connected to Aleksandar and Andrej Vucic to the end,” Dumanovic concluded.
