Mirsad Djerlek, the state secretary of the Serbian Health Ministry, said on Aug. 12 that the fourth COVID-19 wave was “gathering momentum” and that its full force would be felt in the coming weeks. If the situation were to develop according to the predictions, he added, stricter measures would have to be reintroduced.

“The epidemiological situation has been getting worse in the past two-three weeks, especially these past few days,” Djerlek told the RTS public service.

When asked about the profiles of the current patients, he said that what they all had in common was the fact that they had not been vaccinated, adding that the majority of them had just returned from their summer vacations or they had attended parties.

“We are talking mostly about mild and severe symptoms,” Djerlek said and added that the government “will not be sitting idly,” waiting for autumn to change the measures.

According to him, if “this rapid infection trend” continues, the allowed number of people gathered in one place would have to be lowered. Speaking about the vaccination of the younger generations, Djerlek said that around 20 percent of the youth had received the shots, which marks a slight rise in numbers, but that it was not enough.
