Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani said on Aug. 15 that she supported Kosovo taking in refugees from Afghanistan "without any hesitation."
She described this as a humanitarian operation based on the principle that one did not shut out "those forced to leave their homes through no fault of their own, in order to escape persecution and escape with their lives."
The president of Kosovo wrote on Facebook that citizens of Afghanistan would undergo full security assessments by the U.S. during their temporary stay in Kosovo until their documents for the U.S. were prepared.
She noted that, on July 16, a few days after the world, and Kosovo in particular, had marked World Refugee Day, she had received a request from U.S. Ambassador to Pristina Philip Kosnett, who relayed U.S. President Joseph Biden and Secretary of State Anthony Blinken's desire to provide temporary refuge for innocent civilians targeted by the Taliban "simply because they sided with an ally to Kosovo, sided with peace and democracy and equality and justice."
