A doctorand of the Faculty of Political Studies in Belgrade, Milan Vukelic, assessed on Aug. 18 that the new rulers of Afghanistan could be expected in the future “to fully implement Sharia law and organize a state headed by religious leaders, like it used to be during the former caliphates.”
“Accordingly, I believe that hints of the Taliban spokesperson about the non-discrimination of women was just a mask, aimed at calming the international community’s response. After all, he stated that women’s rights would be honored within Sharia rules, which still implies certain prohibitions,” Vukelic told BETA.
He said that events in Afghanistan represented “a huge defeat of the western world and its values” and “a triumph of Islamic fundamentalism, perhaps the greatest since the Islamic revolution in Iran, led by Ayatollah Khomeini in 1979.”
In his words, the situation in Afghanistan would cause additional destabilization in the region because, for many jihadist groups, the triumph of the Taliban can represent an incentive and encouragement to also launch a jihad against the U.S. and western powers.
