A former minister for the environment, Goran Trivan, said on Aug. 25 that the technology employed to extract lithium was "catastrophic," and "there's no doubt it destroys the environment."
"As far as I'm concerned, the exploitation of lithium in Serbia is impossible, because we can't accept the dramatic destruction of nature for a little bit of profit. The pictures of lithium mines across the world look dramatic enough, but the question is also why European states refuse to exploit lithium, even though their lithium deposits are much richer than Serbia's," Trivan said in an interview with the Danas paper.
The former minister explained that he couldn't see any economic reason for that course of action, adding that Serbia had yet to invest enormous efforts to defend itself against "dirty, devastating technologies imposed by global leaders and global corporations." "As long as the Serbian government fails to set the environment as a priority, foreign companies working in Serbia will just follow suit," Trivan said.
