Attorney Borivoje Borovic

Lawyer Borivoje Borovic said on Aug. 26 that it was Nebojsa Stefanovic, the former foreign minister of Serbia, who should had received the main credit for the arrest of the Belivuk-Miljkovic gang.

In an interview for the Novi Magazin weekly, Borovic said that Stefanovic had also been the one to uncover Jovanjica, the largest marihuana plantation in Europe. And when it came to the arrest of the Belvik-Miljkovic clan, the lawyer added, foreign secret services, such as the FBI and DEA, too, played an important role as they had helped decipher the phones the gang had been using.

“If it hadn’t been for the foreign services, [the gang] would never have been prosecuted. It turned out that our government had no evidence to prove the crimes were committed by the group,” Borovic said.

When asked to explain how authorities worked with crime groups, the lawyer replied that in case of Serbia, it was ruled by a president, of the state and the main political party, who expected the criminals to control the elections and ensure he had votes.

“The direct contact with the gang leaders was made by Vucic’s ministers. I can’t believe just how naïve and reckless they have been. They don’t get that their appetites might cost them their lives. I don’t mean to cause panic, but I’m afraid that they won’t find it easy to get out of the vicious cycle they’ve gotten themselves in,” Borovic concluded.
