Social Democratic Party leader Boris Tadic has said that it is harmful to insist on the notion that the opposition only stands a chance in the election for the Belgrade City Assembly because that demotivates abstainers in Serbia.

"The elections are far enough, so there is certainly a possibility of increasing the chances of the opposition's victory in other parts of the country, too. However, that will not happen if we only insist on Belgrade because in that way we will discourage the already demotivated citizens," Tadic told the Aug. 27 issue of daily Blic.

Tadic pointed out that he was sure the rest of the country also wanted to be "liberated from the criminal authorities" like the citizens of Belgrade, and that it certainly must not be neglected. He underscored that it was wrong for opposition politicians to discuss in the media the most effective way in which the opposition should participate in the elections next spring, but rather should agree on that amongst themselves, as he had proposed earlier.

Tadic again invited the rest of the opposition to a meeting, to arrange the way in which they would partake in the polls.

"The consolidation of the opposition struggle must be above all individual interests and that must not be a matter of monopoly, but rather of unity and an honest intention and will," he said.
