Belgrade's conference of the Non-Aligned Movement was marked by a Russian debut, as the country was granted observer status last summer, Moscow's Kommersant daily reported on Oct. 13.
"The organizers made it possible for Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to be the first speaker after heads of state and the U.N. leadership," the newspaper said, adding that Balkan experts had agreed that Lavrov was presented as Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic's "guest of honor."
"The event in Belgrade was clearly designed to offer an opportunity to Russia to define its position within the Movement with Serbia's assistance," the paper quoted a foreign affairs analyst of Croatia's Jutarnji List, Vlado Jurisic.
Kommersant went on to say that the summit, the principles of which demanded that the floor should never be used to address one's own internal or external problems, was very often used precisely for that purpose.
