Serbia’s Parliament Speaker Ivica Dacic has issued a call for global solidarity in combating climate change as well as for the technological and financial support needed to achieve common goals in this area.

“Without that, I am not optimistic that we will be able to efficiently surmount our generation’s greatest problem, which is the devastation of the [global] climate and accelerated change we won’t be able to stop,” Dacic told the Parliamentary Meeting at the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), held in Glasgow on Nov. 7.

In his opinion, there are no political or economic differences or interests that can justify anyone’s withdrawal from the joint battle to preserve the climate – even though, according to him, the Glasgow summit witnessed attempts at such excuses including other reasons being put forth as more important than the fate of our planet.

Dacic further stated that Serbia is active in the fight against climate change and has joined every global initiative to reduce the emission of harmful gasses. Although the country is small and does not play a prominent part in the global climate threat, it does contribute to the problem.

“For years, Serbia has been implementing a variety of measures to stimulate energy transition and increase capacities for the production of power from renewable energy sources. So far, we have managed to [ensure that] a fifth of our total power production is from renewable sources – and we will continue to increase this [percentage],” Dacic said, adding that just as no one can combat climate change alone, no one can by themselves implement measures to stop negative climate impact.
