Serbia’s leading virologist, Milanko Sekler, said on Jan. 12 that the number of new infections might be twice as high as official figures showed, adding that the omicron variant of Covid-19 dominated the general population.

“A report that there were nearly 14,000 new infections on Jan. 11 doesn’t mean very much to me. Not everyone queueing up in freezing temperatures get tested – some give up, and some are sent back home to return another day. I’m talking about days when between 8,000 and 9,000 new cases were reported, and I’m confident the latest five-digit figure must be twice as high,” Sekler said in an interview with the Pink TV.

“Studies suggest that one of the reasons for such a rapid spread is not so much that the omicron variant is highly transmissible, but rather that a large number of infected people have no symptoms at all,” Sekler said.
