Council of Europe

Serbian representatives avoided the vote on expelling Russia from the Council of Europe both at an emergency session of the organization's Parliamentary Assembly on March 15, and at a meeting of the Committee of Ministers the following day, BETA has learned.

The Council of Europe expelled Russia as a member on March 16 because of its aggression against Ukraine. The Committee made the decision at an emergency meeting the day after the Parliamentary Assembly unanimously adopted the opinion that Russia could no longer be a member of the organization.

The Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not answer BETA's question about how the Serbian representatives voted at the emergency meeting of the Committee of Ministers when the decision on Russia's expulsion was made. The representatives were on the list of attendees but, according to BETA's information, they left the meeting before the vote.

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe previously unanimously adopted the opinion that Russia could no longer be a member of the organization. Out of the 324 members of the body, 219 voted - 216 voted for the motion and three refrained from voting. According to the information published on the Council of Europe website, none of the seven Serbian representatives voted.
