Aleksandar ‘Cuta’ Jovanovic, the main candidate of the We Must coalition ticket, has stated that the events in Ukraine have completely overshadowed the upcoming Serbian elections but that nothing can fully eclipse the “brutal images of nature [and] rivers destroyed, and of people that must either leave their homes or defend [them].”

“And that is why Parliament will look very different following [the upcoming] elections,” Jovanovic told the March 21 edition of the Nova daily. The We Must candidate also expressed his belief that the Serbian Progressive Party will likely win the parliamentary vote but added that he expects the opposition to garner a significant number of seats in the Assembly, thereby “definitely [spelling] the beginning of the end of Aleksandar Vucic’s autocracy.”

Furthermore, Jovanovic stated his hope that the opposition will win the local vote for Belgrade city government. If the current regime loses its hold on the capital, Jovanovic said, one can easily expect another parliamentary vote to be called in less than twelve months’ time. “After all, this election is important [precisely] because of the next one, after which I am absolutely certain Vucic will fall from power,” Jovanovic concluded.
