At a meeting between Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) workers in Kragujevac and Serbian government officials visiting the factory, an arrangement has been made to design a special social program for the workers, who were also promised that there would be no layoffs, and advised not to sign anything until the program was in place.

The social program will be drafted by the end of May, the workers quoted Serbian Minister of Labor Darija Kisic-Tepavcevic as saying, adding that once it’s ready they would be able to choose whether to accept it.

“We’ll stop the gatherings until we see the social program. If we are not satisfied with it, we’ll want it changed, and if it’s not, we’ll take to the streets again. The Government of Serbia guarantees that not a single worker will be fired,” a FIAT worker, Djordje Milojevic, said to an N1 reporter after the meeting.

The employer offered to the workers in Kragujevac to sign two-year employment contracts with the plants outside Serbia owned by the Stellantis group, within which the Fiat operates, or to leave their jobs with severance pay provided for them.

The FCA Independent Trade Union said it didn’t take part in the meeting with Minister Kisic-Tepavcevic to discuss the status of Fiat workers, because the three trade unions operating within the factory had a similar meeting with her two days ago, also attended by a state secretary at the Ministry of Economy, at which no consensus had been reached.

The trade union leader, Sasa Djordjevic, said to BETA that there’s room for negotiations to reach a solution acceptable for Fiat workers.
