Montenegrin President Milo Djukanovic had agreed with top EU figures to withdraw from politics but on the condition to do it his way, Podgorica daily Vijesti reported on July 5 citing sources in Brussels.

“Djukanovic has said that if he is a barrier to Montenegro’s faster EU integration, he is ready to step back and withdraw from power, but has requested to do it his way and with dignity. Djukanovic has received support for his intention from key EU figures, heads of states and governments and EU top officials, and if Djukanovic kept his word, the EU would deem it a fair solution,” a source from one of the leading EU member states had told the Vijesti.

According to the article in the daily, Djukanovic has recently been more constructive in relation to Montenegro’s EU accession and has stopped “putting mockers on the country’s EU path by saying one thing but doing another.”

A change in Djukanovic’s conduct and actions has been observed and therefore Brussels is hoping that there will be no unpleasant surprises and that his era will be over with the end of his presidential term next year.
