Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced late on July 13 that, if necessary, the Serbian government will take over management of Naftna Industrija Srbije (NIS) from Russia’s Gazprom – NIS’s majority shareholder – until the sanctions on Russia come to an end, after which control would be reverted to Gazprom.

Appearing on Pink TV, Vucic explained that, in such an event, Serbia would sign a “binding contract” ensuring that the change in management take place only if absolutely necessary and only while the sanctions are in effect. The Serbian state has no intention of seizing anything, Vucic emphasized.

The president further said that two-thirds of the natural gas needed for the winter season has already been secured and that two million tons of coal will be purchased from the Chinese. The state has also ensured that the strategic reserves include 77 days’ worth of diesel and 65 days’ worth of gasoline, he said, adding that Serbia will be paying Russia between EUR355 and EUR420 for natural gas, depending on the prices of oil.
