Serbian Foreign Minister Nikola Selakovic opened in Ohrid, on July 23, a Serbian consular office, which will be run by an honorary consul.
Minister Selakovic explained that the institution of honorary consul had a long and rich tradition, and undeniable significance in diplomatic and consular relations. Selakovic noted that he had opened Serbia’s 86th honorary consulate. “I am confident that the inauguration of the consular office in Ohrid, which will cover the territories of Ohrid, Struga, Debar, Galicica, Debarac and Centar Zupa under the new consul, Mihajlo Filev, will provide an additional incentive for cooperation between Serbia and North Macedonia,” Selakovic was quoted as saying by his ministry.
The foreign minister recalled in a press release that Serbia once had consular offices in Skopje and Bitol, but that the office was the first to be opened in Ohrid. He also said that bilateral ties were traditionally good in many segments, describing them as brotherly not just friendly.
“Cooperation with neighbors, protecting peace and stability in the region and the aspiration to join the European Union are Serbia’s foreign policy priorities. A shared desire for cooperation and stronger bridges to bring us closer together is reflected in the Open Balkans Initiative, as part of which three states have made a serious breakthrough in intensifying economic cooperation and improving the quality of life of their citizens,” Selakovic said.
