The Higher Court in Belgrade has scheduled for Oct. 14 the trial of four Croatian officers charged with shelling a refugee column on Petrovacka Cesta road in August 1995, the Politika newspaper learned on Aug. 31.
The proceeding stemming from the indictment raised by the Serbian Office of the War Crimes Prosecutor against Vladimir Mikac, Zdenko Radulj, Zeljko Jelenic and Danijel Borovic for complicity in war crimes against civilians, will be led by a trial chamber presided over by Judge Vladimir Duruz.
Although the Office of the War Crimes Prosecutor proposed that the proceeding against the indictees be conducted in their absence, according to Politika's information the Higher Court has not made a decision on the matter.
The attorney of first defendant Mikac, Aleksandar Olenik, has said that it is clear that a war crime was committed on Petrovacka Cesta, that there is plenty of evidence and numerous witnesses and victims who confirm that Croatian aircraft bombed the refugee column on Aug. 7 and 8, 1995, and added that "the point is that in this particular proceeding there is not enough evidence specifically against the four accused."
