President of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen is visiting Belgrade on Oct. 28 as part of a tour of the Western Balkans to “highlight solidarity with the region,” as well as the determination by the European Union (EU) to materialize a program of investment in the area and to confirm the “European perspective” and the continuation of accession talks with the states of the region.
Having announced the visit in Brussels, on Oct. 24, a spokesman for the Commission, Eric Mamer, underlined that the EC president had already promised to include the Western Balkans in the Union’s mechanism for collective gas purchases.
The EC spokesman said that Ursula von der Leyen would also highlight “the EU’s resolve to continue cooperation with the Western Balkans regarding all strategic and key issues, especially concerning the global stakes in Russia’s war in Ukraine.”
The EC president will arrive in Skopje on Oct. 26, travelling to Pristina and Tirana the next day. She will stay in Sarajevo and Belgrade on Friday, visiting Podgorica on Oct. 29.
