Belgrade’s Air Pollution Ranks Fifth Highest in World

According to the website IQair, the quality of air in Belgrade in the morning of Nov. 16 was the fifth worst globally.

The site’s 7:15 am situation report stated that the Serbian capital’s air quality index was 179, with a PM2.5 concentration 21 times greater than recommended by the World Health Organization.

The same report ranked Pakistan’s largest city, Karachi, as the most polluted, followed by Kolkata

in India and Krakow in Poland. The list of the top ten cities with the worst air quality also included Skopje, Berlin and Sofia.

Based on the local website Beoeko, Belgrade’s air in the morning of Nov. 16 was polluted, with an average PM2.5 concentration of 66 µg/m3 – compared to the WHO-recommended 24-hour mean of 15 µg/m3 – and a PM10 concentration of 69 µg/m3, which exceeds the WHO’s recommends 24-hour mean of 45 µg/m3.
