Council for Fighting Corruption: Battle Against Corruption Not a Priority for Anyone in the Government

Council for Fighting Corruption vice-president Miroslav Milicevic said on Feb. 2 the the corruption perception index for Serbia in the last 11 years had not declined because fighting corruption had not been a priority for the anyone in the government.

Milicevic told BETA that over the past several years there had been practically no mention of fighting corruption in the coalition agreements of political parties. "It is hard to believe, but fighting corruption is not the first item on the agenda for anyone. The citizens get the impression that cracking down on corruption is practically pointless," Milicevic stressed.

"Corruption is virtually unpunishable in Serbia and it is committed by people who have the knowledge and skills. The resources that the owners of capital have are far larger than the resources that countries in transition can allocate to fighting corruption," Milicevic said.
