A march of solidarity brought together several hundred participants in Belgrade on Feb. 24, the anniversary of the Russian attack on Ukraine, a demonstration that concluded with the unfurling of a dozens meter long Ukrainian flag in the central Trg Republike square.

The participants carried flags and signs reading "Ukraine will win," "Peace for Ukraine," and, "Stop the war in Ukraine," and chanted "Glory to Ukraine, glory to the heroes." Ukrainian Ambassador Volodymyr Tolkach, the head of the European Union Delegation to Serbia, the Swedish ambassador to Serbia, representatives of the embassies of the U.S., Germany and other countries, and representatives of the opposition Green-Left coalition participated in the event.

Sweden's Ambassador Annika Ben David, whose country is currently chairing the EU, said the war in Ukraine was a turning point for Europe and the world. EU Delegation head Emanuele Giaufret re-affirmed support for Ukraine. Ambassador Tolkach said support for Ukraine was growing, as evidenced by a recent vote of the U.N. General Assembly.

"We are happy that Serbia, a friendly and historically close country, is also increasing its support to Ukraine. Ukraine is protecting not just its own freedom today, but the future of democracy and the EU. The fate of Russia will likely depend on Ukraine's victory, too -- whether its people will get a chance for freedom and dignity," Tolkach said to those assembled. He concluded his address with the words: "Glory to Ukraine, long live Serbia."
