On May 5, the government of Serbia passed new measures tightening the rules on weapons, ammunition and explosive devices, which Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic proposed after a mass shooting in Mladenovac and surrounding villages.

The cabinet explained in a press release that the Ministry of the Interior would immediately prepare amendments to the Weapons and Ammunition Act, prescribing stricter requirements for holding and carrying short-barreled guns. Those who do not meet the new requirements will be included in a mandatory gun purchase scheme, the government said.

A decision was made for the Ministry to issue a public appeal to the owners of illegal weapons and explosive devices to surrender them without legal consequences within 30 days.

The release went on to say that the Ministry of Justice would prepare amendments to toughen up penalties for the “illegal production, storage, carrying and sale of weapons and explosive devices.” The Ministry of Education will also prepare amendments for the stricter punishment of students caught bringing alcohol, drugs, psychoactive substances, weapons and pyrotechnics to school.
