President Aleksandar Vucic’s approach to government “is not a democracy” and such leadership has shaped Serbia’s society and media into what they currently are, Maja Sever, the head of the European Federation of Journalists, said on May 8.
“His dramatic statements over the last two days have demonstrated, yet again, why we are all living amidst such ghastliness,” Sever told the Danas daily, segueing from the remark that Vucic has already passed judgement on the suspects in last week’s two mass shootings, having stated that “they will never again see the light of day.”
According to her, no one has cause to be surprised by such rhetoric considering that, just two days ago, Vucic made public the confidential medical data of a thirteen-year-old suspect.
In Sever’s opinion, Serbia’s media and society at large include people with high moral and ethical standards, who are professionals, and these individuals should not give up but rather continue to do their jobs.
