Two Serbian nationals, members of an international organized criminal group, were arrested on suspicion that they had been involved in human trafficking, the Serbian Ministry of the Interior reported on July 24.

According to the Ministry, V.S. (67) and M.S. (33), together with another 18 members of the group arrested in Spain, had made it possible for at least 53 Cuban migrants to cross illegally into Spain from October 2022 to April, this year.

They organised illegal crossings from Serbia to North Macedonia or Bosnia and Herzegovina, and from there to Spain, using Serbia’s visa-free regime applying to Cuban citizens, which was revoked last April.

The arrests followed a joint investigation by the Spanish and Serbian police departments, supported by the Interpol, Europol and Selec, which had taken months.
