Even though corruption in the judiciary was a major problem across the Balkans, no other state has followed Albania in a rigorous checkup to identify the judges and prosecutors unable to explain the origin of their wealth, in which nearly 45 percent of judges and prosecutors lost their jobs.

The Balkan Investigative Research Network (BIRN) reported on Aug. 9 that in Serbia, Montenegro and North Macedonia, public officials’ property records were publicly available, but the data included were never verified. In Serbia, there are exceptions from this rule concerning judges and prosecutors involved in the cases related to organized crime, terrorism and corruption.

Until Jan. 31, this year, 359 judges and public prosecutors (nearly 45 percent) were dismissed in Albanian after a verification probe launched in 2016 as an important part of a reform of Albania’s judiciary.
