Democrat Leader: Vucic Diverting Attention from Responsibility for Violence in Society by Talking Elections

The president of the Democratic Party, Zoran Lutovac, stated on Aug. 9 that, by talking about elections, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic was diverting attention from the Progressives’ responsibility for the violence in the society.

Lutovac told BETA that President Vucic was “spinning” and trying to divert attention from the tragic event in Backa Palanka, where an elderly man and his grandson were killed due to the authorities’ negligence. “Vucic is offering fake elections by which, without media freedom and with blackmail, pressures and stealing of votes, the political and all other tension and violence in the society would allegedly be resolved,” stated the president of the Democratic Party.

He stressed that Vucic was resorting to any means to whitewash the Progressives’ responsibility for the very bad state the country is in. “In the middle of summer 2023, Vucic is holding a news conference about ‘successes’ in 2027, while offering responses to the crucial problems via fixed questions from journalists of the regime-controlled media,” Lutovac assessed.

He said Vucic’s claim about having offered the holding of elections in Belgrade to the opposition 50 times was not true. “In the past year, Vucic never offered the holding of early elections in Belgrade to anyone. His claim that he had invited the opposition for talks several times is not true, either. We never officially received any offer for talks or anything else from him,” Lutovac stated.
