During an Aug. 23 visit to the Belgrade suburb of Borca, where he attended a ceremony in which keys to 250 apartments were handed to refugees from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic promised that “Serbia will never forget its people, and will always stay by their side, wherever they may live.”

“Serbia has not always been fair to its people, and has failed to meet all the expectations of the Serbs west of the Drina and the Danube, but to them it has always been home, very much loved,” Vucic said. The president thanked the European Union (EU) repeatedly for donating a large portion of the funds to support the refugee program, underlining that they did not always see eye to eye, and that Serbia was pursuing an autonomous, freedom-loving policy.

Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Emanuele Giaufret said that the regional housing program was established as a regional initiative by four states born in the territory of the former Yugoslavia, in a bid to assist most vulnerable refugees and displaced persons.

“This program strengthens regional and social cohesion, and offers new opportunities for economy, while also highlighting the importance of regional cooperation and good neighborly relations, as well as of the advantages of peace and stability in the region,” the ambassador said, adding that the EU was the largest donor, having covered 80 percent of the program’s budget.
