U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Gabriel Escobar is to visit North Macedonia on Aug. 24, the state news agency MIA has announced.

Escobar will meet with President Stevo Pendarovski, while meetings with Prime Minister Dimitar Kovacevski and the leader of the largest Macedonian opposition party VMRO-DPMNE, Hristijan Micoski, are also envisaged.

Escobar’s visit to Skopje follows the start of the parliamentary procedure for including Bulgarians in the Constitution, which is the condition for North Macedonia to hold the second inter-government session and continue negotiations with the European Union, which it formally started in July last year with the “screening process.”

A minimum of 80 MPs have to vote in favor of the Proposal to amend the constitution, the sole item on the agenda of 123rd session, for it to pass. That is the first of the three phases of amending the Constitution.
