Serbian Trade Minister Tomislav Momirovic will on Sept. 8 talk with representatives of retail chains about reducing the retail margin and thereby the final price for 13 products.
Belgrade media have learned from the Ministry that the list includes the following products: milk, yogurt, sliced cheese, potatoes, chicken (carcass), wrapped baloney, coffee, chocolate, baby food, baby diapers, shampoo for adults, laundry detergent, and dishwashing liquid.
When presenting the August inflation report, National Bank of Serbia Governor Jorgovanka Tabakovic pointed out that growing retail margins were causing inflation in Serbia to decrease more slowly.
She underscored that there was room to reduce margins without threatening the functionality of retail.
Given that the retail margin is the retailers' gross earning after they have used the turnover achieved to cover the costs of procuring the goods, according to the central bank's report at the level of the entire sector the gross profit saw a cumulative increase in nominal terms of close to 50 percent in the period 2019-2022, i.e. it went from around 540 billion dinars in 2019 to 807 billion in 2022, while the retail margin rate increased from 14.9 percent to 16.1 percent.
