On Sept. 13, opposition aldermen of the capital’s assembly demanded immediate local Belgrade and parliamentary elections along with the resignation of incumbent Belgrade Mayor Aleksandar Sapic, who, in their words, “has been embroiled in so many scandals that he has become a symbol of corruption.”
Ahead of a session of Belgrade’s local assembly, representative Dobrica Veselinovic, of the Green-Left Front, stated that the opposition is making a united statement to show that it can and will cooperate at both the local and national level.
Freedom and Justice Party alderwoman Mila Popovic said that the opposition is demanding snap elections because the current authorities lost their legitimacy when the opposition garnered 70,000 more votes than the regime at the last Belgrade election.
“We’re demanding elections because Sapic has been embroiled in so many scandals that he has become a symbol of corruption,” said Popovic, after whom other representatives of the opposition made their own statements.
