Serbian Farmers Block Roads in Protest, Nov. 13. 2023 (BETAPHOTO/LJILJANA STUPAR)

On Nov. 13, Serbian farmers staged a protest by blocking roads and the petroleum refinery in Novi Sad after the Serbian government did not meet their demands.

Vladimir Visic, a member of the board of the Serbian Farmers' Survival Initiative, told BETA that the roadblocks would probably be removed overnight and replaced on Nov. 14 until demands were met.

Three weeks ago, farmers sent their demands to the Serbian government. The most important are raising subsidies per hectare from RSD18,000 to RSD35,000, selling diesel fuel sans excise tax at gas stations and regulating the commodities market.

Board member Djoka Curcic said at the refinery blockade that there would be no more negotiations with the government as it did not fulfill its promises, and that farmers now had time on their hands and could stay on the roadblocks until Christmas.
