Should voter turnout be high, there is a chance the opposition may win the elections, but incumbent President Aleksandar Vucic could still declare his party’s victory, said Danica Popovic, a professor of the Belgrade University School of Economics, on Nov. 22.
Speaking for the latest edition of the Nova daily, Popovic said that the main hurdle the opposition faces is not that Vucic has money, but that he is supported by the West.
“And the West is the player with both money and political influence. The West needs Vucic to surrender Kosovo, to sign it away, and that is why they are keeping him afloat. As for the opposition, the West has no interest in them at the moment – Kosovo is their top priority. And I think they’d be relieved if Vucic won the election,” the professor explained.
Commenting on the ongoing protests by postal service employees, farmers and healthcare workers’ unions, Popovic expressed her belief that Vucic controls everyone – “the media, the postmen and the farmers” – by giving each “crumbs of what they ask for.”
The professor went on to say that she supported the ProGlas initiative calling on people to vote. As for the negative attention this drew to the declaration’s signatories, Popovic stated that most of them knew in advance what to expect, such as judge Miodrag Majic, who said that he only expects the worst from representatives of the current regime.
