Over 20 senior European politicians including the chairs of several national parliamentary foreign committees called on European Commission President Ursula fon der Leyen and other EU officials to launch an investigation into allegations of fraud in December elections in Serbia.
"We call on the EU to conduct an independent probe into all reported electoral irregularities and claims of fraud," the European politicians said in a letter that the Brussels Politico website (www.politico.eu) examined on Jan. 18.
Among the 24 signatories of the letter are Michael Roth, chairman of German parliament's foreign committee and his French colleague Jean-Louis Bourlanges, as well as the chairs of Italy's, Denmark's and Luxembourg's foreign committees.
They called on the EU to independently investigate the accusations of election fraud and provide recommendations for securing a free and fair election in Serbia, Politico added. "Depending on the findings of the investigation, new elections might be needed in Serbia. Our joint goal is to see Serbia as a member of the EU in this decade," the letter says.
