Expert: Serbia Has Enough Sun and Wind for Power Plants

Belgrade School of Electrical Engineering professor Nikola Rajakovic said on March 7 that the region and Serbia had a very good renewable energy potential and that it was necessary to build facilities that would decarbonize the industry, i.e. leave fossil fuels behind and transition to hydrogen and ammonia-based technologies.

According to the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan, Rajakovic told RTS, Serbia is supposed to stop producing coal by 2050, meaning that building capacities for green energy needed to be speeded up.

"Serbia has enough sun to build rather solid solar power plants, enough wind, not everywhere, in south Banat predominantly, to build excellent wind parks. We have water, and enough biomass, but also geothermal energy as well," Rajakovic said. He added that this was the moment when the "green transition" needed to be expedited, which was impossible without investment.

He added that Serbia had nine wind parks connected to the grid, several smaller solar power plant, while the construction of about a dozen similar facilities was being prepared, which would be built both by foreign and domestic investors, and that Elektroprivreda Srbije was also building a wind park.
