The French military has deployed Thales GM200 surveillance radars in positions in Romania, on NATO’s south wing, to support allies in that area, the portal Balkan Security Network reported on March 20.

One multi-purpose mobile radar with the range of up to 250 kilometers has been deployed in the Capu Midia test range near the Romanian city of Constanta, after another GM200 radar was already deployed earlier.

The radars deployed in Romania are included into NATO’s integrated system of anti-air and anti-missile defense.

France has been keeping a strong multi-role military contingent in the traditionally friendly and Francophone Romania since 2022, in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This force includes contingents from Belgium and The Netherlands.
