A Serbian theologian, Vukasin Milicevic, criticized the leadership of the Serbian Orthodox Church on June 12, warning that the religious community had turned into "an ideological service for a society based on injustice."
"The Church does not advocate universal values, Christian values, but quite the opposite: extremely particular, ethno-religious values that are fundamentally opposed to universal Christian values. The Church is becoming its own antithesis," Milicevic said on the Network of Academic Solidarity (MASA) podcast.
The theologian added that there existed "a political-religious-economic elite" and that the conduct of the Church had become socially destructive. According to Milicevic, the latest census had indicated that society in Serbia was extremely religious, but the situation was quite different in practice.
Milicevic was dismissed from the Orthodox Theological Faculty as he had criticized the Church for its stance on Darwin's theory of evolution, being equally critical of church dignitaries’ conduct during the COVID-19 pandemic. Milicevic published the novel "Vasksenje" (Resurrection), describing the influence of politics, circles within the Church and organized crime on lives in Serbia. The book was met with harsh criticism from the Church.
