The French ambassador to Serbia, Jean-Louis Falconi, reiterated on Feb. 19 France's support to Serbian future in the European Union (EU), explaining that a new enlargement methodology had been designed to produce tangible benefits in the accession process.

"You can count on France and our embassy to stand by your side in the European choice you have made," Falconi said at a reception he hosted at his Belgrade residence, closing a year celebrating the 180th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Serbia and France.

The ambassador also said that last year's visit to Serbia by French President Emmanuel Macron reaffirmed the French desire to get back to the Balkans and strengthen political, economic, cultural and research ties with the region.

"Our relations were established way before 1839, back in the Middle Ages, under very fortunate circumstances surrounding a wedding between Helen of Anjou and Serbian King Uros the First in 1245," Falcon said in a speech he delivered in the Serbian language.

Over the past 12 months, the French embassy in Serbia and the Serbian embassy in France used articles in the press, lectures and documentary materials to mark the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two states.
