A total of EUR5.8m will be invested in a biomass heating plant in Novi Pazar for the construction of new biomass boilers and renewing the remote heating system, according to a contract penned in the Ministry of Mining and Energy with representatives of the city authorities and city heating plant.
“Heating plants in five municipalities in Serbia which have been burning fossil fuels will be given EUR26.75m for transitioning to biomass,” Minister of Mining and Energy Aleksandar Antic said after signing the contract.
The use of gas, he said, will enable the construction of an additional 4 megawatt gas boilers which will make sure that the city is secure energy-wise and in terms of energy supply. “This project is important also because it solves the problem of air pollution in a quality way,” the minister was quoted as saying by his office.
He stressed that one of his ministry’s priorities was supporting local self-administrations in transitioning to biomass and recalled that a project for connecting Kopaonik, Novi Pazar and Tutin with a gas pipeline in Aleksandrovac.
Novi Pazar Mayor Nihat Bisevac said that the city’s heating plant had so far used heating oil which is a major pollutant and that this had led to the closing of the heating plant which is located in the city’s central area.
“The new power plant will have environmentally friendly production, the cost of heating will significantly go down, with a higher capacity for new consumers. This brings significant benefits to our local community,” Bisevac said. The biomass heating plant is being underwritten by the Serbian and German cabinets, Germany’s KfW development bank, as well as the Swiss SECO Start-Up Fund and should be completed by fall 2022.
Contracts with the Prijepolje and Knjazevac municipalities are also planned.
