In 2022 Serbia will probably have an economic growth rate of 2.3 percent which is the lowest in the region, Belgrade Faculty of Economics teacher Danica Popovic has said.
In an interview with BETA, Popovic said that a growth rate of 2.5 percent was the average rate of growth and that a country should not have a lower rate than that in normal times.
"From a high growth rate of seven percent in 2021, which was the result of recovery from the worst year of the pandemic, there is nothing left and it melted last year from 4.2 percent in the first quarter, and 3.8 percent in the second quarter, to an estimated 2.3 percent at the end of the year. This is a record low in the region in 2022," Popovic said.
Inflation, she said, was higher than in neighboring countries and higher than in the EU while the government was constantly talking about imported inflation.
Asked when inflation would start decreasing and return to the target range of three percent, plus-minus 1.5 percent, Popovic said that "it will probably gradually calm down, because the National Bank of Serbia has justifiably raised the discount rate and inflation could be halved by mid-year."
