The Serbian Ministry of the Environment and the U.N. Development Program (UNDP), with the help of the Global Environmental Fund (GEF) have awarded USD190,000 to the authors of the 19 best innovative solutions from Serbia for the quicker transition to a circular economy, the UNDP announced on Nov. 16.

The awards were handed to private, public and social companies, scientific institutions and citizens' organizations. At the awards ceremony it was stressed that their innovations would contribute to the more efficient use of resources and energy, the better management of waste and thereby reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the preservation of the environment.

Minister of Environmental Protection secretary of state Sandra Dokic said that examples of good practice needed to be a motivation for transitioning to a more sustainable way of life. UNDP deputy permanent representative in Serbia Fabrizio Andreuzzi said that a circular economy increased the competitiveness of the economy and could incite inclusive and just economic growth.

The awards ceremony was organized as part of the "Lowering the carbon footprint of local communities by applying the principle of a circular economy in Serbia - circular communities," which was being conducted by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and the UNDP, with the financial support of the GEF.
