The United Development Program (UNDP) announced on May 22, International Day for Biological Diversity that Sweden would provide USD600,000 in funding for seven innovative solutions for protecting, revitalizing and preserving wetlands in protected areas of Serbia, which would be realized by public companies and civil society organizations.
The innovative solutions were picked in a public call which UNDP scheduled in June 2024 as part of the EU for Green Agenda in Serbia. "Sweden's support to protecting wetlands in Serbia is of vital importance to preserving biodiversity, mitigating climate change and ensuring sustainable development. This cooperation confirms our commitment to protecting these important ecosystems, which benefit all citizens and future generations," Swedish Ambassador to Serbia Charlotte Sammelin said.
Antoine Avignon, program manager for environment and climate change in the EU Delegation to Serbia, stressed that it was important for Serbia to align with the EU law on nature restoration, which is the backbone of the European green deal and the EU Strategy for Biodiversity 2030.
