Rebecca MacDonald, the most successful businesswomen of Serbian origin in Canada, has said that she has never invested in Serbia as she believes that no healthy business can be run in a country where the economy is not kept separate from politics.

“I really do not know how to swim where no rules exist. I know of some cases… people coming back from Serbia have told me that they would start a business and everything would go well up to a certain point when someone would show up saying ‘this is no longer yours,’” MacDonald has told monthly Magazin Biznis. She is the owner of natural gas and electricity retailer Just Energy Group, based in Canada.

MacDonald added that such practice was inconceivable in the West, adding that “politics and the economy must be kept separate, because where one has to be politically involved for to run a business, it is not a healthy economy.”

Just Energy Group, employing around 3,000 people, has an annual turnover of around CAD4 billion (around USD3 billion) and trades it shares on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
