Epidemiologist Predrag Kon said on Aug. 10 that at the time being Belgrade is not a COVID-19 hotbed, but that the possibility of the virus spreading fast is still very high.

He told Prva TV that it is not “too wise” to vaccinate children against COVID-19 as they show the mildest symptoms, unless a child is suffering from a chronic illness.

Should the parents want to vaccinate their healthy child, they will be able to do it, Kon said, adding that he finds it hard to believe that the epidemic will end any time soon.

“In any case, it will last for several years without a vaccine, that’s for sure. It all depends on how the virus will behave in the future. The chances of it disappearing are getting slimmer. So, it’s here to stay,” Kon said and added that how the situation will develop is an unknown.

When asked if there is a possibility of COVID-19 virus merging with the seasonal flu, Kon said that wearing protective masks will be useful against the flu as well.

According to Serbian Health Ministry’s data from Aug. 9, 236 new COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in Serbia, while nine more patients have passed away due to virus-related complications.
