According to his statement from Nov. 26, Serbian Health Ministry State Secretary Mirsad Djerlek believes that the latest epidemic wave to hit Serbia will worsen the patients’ clinical manifestations and that in the next seven to ten days there will be a rise in the number of COVID-19 cases and deaths.

He said for the Pink TV that the numbers in Belgrade no longer make up a half of Serbia’s infected, as was the case before.

At the moment, he said, Belgrade accounts for around 30 percent of the total number of new cases, while new hotbeds have emerged in Novi Sad, Kragujevac, Pancevo and Novi Pazar in the past few days, all of which makes the situation in the entire country, “extremely worrisome.”

The plan is to increase the number of tests performed to up to 30,000 per day, he announced. “Asymptomatic patients are the most dangerous; they spread the [infection] the most, without even knowing they are sick. [The tests will serve as] triage,” Djerlek said.

In the fight against COVID-19, he further added, “we shouldn’t just be idly sitting around waiting for the vaccine.” “The vaccine won’t immediately solve all the problems; several months will have to pass following the mass vaccination before we can say that we’re free [of COVID-19],” Djerlek concluded.
