Fifty-Three People Die of COVID-19 in Serbia, 5,077 Newly Infected

In the last 24 hours, 53 people have died of COVID-19 in Serbia, bringing the death toll to 9,105, an Oct. 17 announcement said.

According to the Serbian Institute of Public Health, 15,437 samples were tested, of which 5,077 were positive for the coronavirus. A total of 6,629 patients are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 of whom 275 are on ventilators. Since the outbreak of the epidemic in Serbia, 5,999,577 people have been tested while 1,048,835 were found to be positive.

Minister Without Portfolio Nenad Popovic said in a press release on Oct. 17 that 250,000 more doses of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine had arrived in Serbia. Popovic, also the head of the Inter-Governmental Committee for Cooperation with Russia, said 100,000 of the shipments were "component one," or first doses, while the remainder were "component two," or second doses.
