On Jan. 13, Novi Sad will officially commence its year as European capital of culture, an occasion it will officially mark within its 'Docek' ('Welcome') celebration.

"As a unique event in Europe, 'Docek' combines two art forms, two alphabets, two New Years, two days, two approaches to measuring time, and so 'Docek' will bring forth a one-of-a-kind celebration that pushes boundaries and will put Novi Sad at the heart of European cultural life," the 'Novi Sad - European Capital of Culture' Foundation has announced.

The central, inaugural event marking Novi Sad's new title will comprise Dragan Zivadinovic's 22-minute play titled "Zeniteum - 2022", which will be staged in one of the city's main boulevards. According to the press release, the performance will celebrate two great Serbian scientific minds: Mileva Maric Einstein and Milutin Milankovic.

'Docek' will also include a large-scale exhibition titled "Time and the Universe" as well as concerts throughout the city.

The organizers announced earlier that all program segments are adapted to the prescribed epidemic measures, severely limiting concert capacities. The Foundation has also adopted additional safety measures and intends to strictly monitor their implementation.
