Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic on Feb. 15 called an early parliamentary election for April 3.

Vucic signed a decision on holding a vote to elect representatives to the Serbian parliament and also signed a decree on disbanding the parliament. He called on citizens to go to the polls and thereby strengthen Serbia’s democratic capacities.

“I am sure that people in Serbia will know to elect the best people. Let the best win,” Vucic said, adding he wished those who would win the election to lead Serbia in the best possible way. The Serbian president also said he was convinced that the election campaign would be good and interesting.

Earlier, Parliament speaker Ivica Dacic called local elections for April 3. Elections for city assemblies will be held in Belgrade and Bor, and for municipal assemblies in Arandjelovac, Smederevska Palanka, Lucani, Medvedja, Knjazevac, Bajina Basta, Doljevac, Kula, Kladovo, Majdanpek, and Sesanj.

Dacic said he would call a presidential election in early March, 90 days before the expiry of the incumbent president’s term in office. “I wish all a successful election campaign and hope that everything will go in a democratic and fair atmosphere,” Dacic said, adding he hoped that citizens would vote based on their confidence in candidates and in line with their perception of Serbia’s future.
