Some ten environmental activists were apprehended in Novi Sad on Oct. 18 for trying to prevent workers of China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) to launch works on building a fourth bridge in Novi Sad over the Danube.

Some 20 CRBC workers showed up in Novi Sad settlement of Sodros to erect fence around the future construction site. In this area a protest camp titled Survivor has been set up where activities, who have been trying to prevent bridge construction in order to preserve the green oasis in a backwater of Danube River, have been staying since June.

Riot police showed up on the site around 9:30 am, helping CRBC workers to erect fence, while taking in around ten environmental activists.

Aleksandar Jovanovic Cuta, an MP of the parliamentary group We Must-Together on Oct. 18 called on opposition MPs to “immediately head to Novi Sad to support the citizens who have been protesting.”

On Oct. 17, Novi Sad Deputy Mayor Milan Djuric said construction works would continue in Sodros, Kamenicka Ada and tourist resort Ribarsko Ostrvo.
