According to the U.S. Ambassador to Serbia, Christopher Hill, Serbia will either have to impose sanctions on Russia or be prepared to pay the high price of not doing so.

In a March 8 interview for the Novi Pazar-based Sto Plus radio station, the U.S. diplomat said that it is very important that Serbia starts aligning its policies with the EU right away, as part of the accession process, rather than wait to do so as an EU member, and that also includes imposing sanctions on Russia.

“We need to know that Russia has brutally attacked its neighbor. Many small EU countries have introduced such measures, although it was difficult for them, but they did it because it was right. I believe that Serbia will understand that; it is never too late to do the right thing,” Hill stated.

When asked if it is the lack of actions against Moscow, insufficient progress in the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue, the state of democracy in Serbia, or problems within the Union itself that impedes Serbia’s accession to the EU, Hill replied that the most sincere answer is – “all of this together.”
