The European Union urged the leadership of Republika Srpska (RS) on April 18 to stop the initiatives for passing the laws that would undermine the constitutional order of Bosnia and Herzegovina and jeopardize its European path.

The EU warned that the Assembly of RS was debating the legal initiatives that would undermine the constitutional order of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the functionality of its institutions and fundamental liberties, and contradict the country’s obligations on the path to the EU.

“We expect the entity’s leadership to stop these legislative initiatives, including primarily the draft laws on elections, referendum, immunity and foreign agents,” it was declared in the statement of the European External Action Service (EEAS).

The EU emphasized that Bosnia and Herzegovina’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and constitutional order had to be honored, as did the decisions of the Constitutional Court and the country’s international identity, adding that any action against these principles would cause serious consequences. After last month’s decision of the European Council on opening the pre-accession negotiations, the EU expects Bosnia, including the Republika Srpska entity, to make steps forward instead of taking action that contradicts its European path.
